Friday night I had the privilege of seeing a friend of mine, Erin Ivey, in concert at University Baptist Church on Guadalupe in the UT area. Erin is a secular artist so I wondered why she had picked this venue for her concert. The associate pastor for the church told us that their heart is to open their space to the community and to the artists that are the souls of our community, to bring secular artists together with a sacred space.
The concerts are called “Cathedral Concerts” and it works, it was great to be in a church that is over 100 years old. It was great to view it’s architecture and feel it’s history while my friend sang. The acoustics are fantastic, at times she didn’t even have to use her microphone.
I’m looking forward to going to more concerts here. There is a suggested donation of $10, all the money goes directly to the artist, not the church. The pastor explained that she really felt that musicians were part of the soul of Austin and this was their way of connecting with that community. They also love that there are people in the church on a Friday night, sharing their space that wouldn’t normally be there.
The concerts are ongoing on Friday nights – you can check out their Facebook page for upcoming shows. You can “like” them to see updates in your news feed.
